Celebrating 80 Years of Bennetts Proactive: A Legacy of Strength and Growth in Te Puke
For 80 years, Bennetts Proactive has been a cornerstone of Te Puke’s business community, evolving alongside the town and playing a vital role in helping businesses thrive across the Bay of Plenty. From its humble beginnings in 1945, the firm has adapted to changes in leadership, economic shifts, service offerings and advancements in technology, building a legacy as a trusted advisor to generations of clients.
Where It All Began
The firm was founded in 1945, shortly after World War II, by Roly and Horace Earp, offering accounting services in Te Puke. At the time, Te Puke had a population of over 1,100 residents. As the years passed, the firm saw key changes. Peter Grant joined, and Roland Earp transitioned to a large kiwifruit orchard in Te Puna, passing the torch to Brian Bennett, who brought experience from the Bay of Plenty Dairy Association.
Adapting to Growth and Change
As Te Puke grew, so did the firm. By the 1960s, the firm practiced as Earp, Grant & Bennett and continued to operate from its premises at 28 Jellicoe Street—a location it had called home since 1950. Founder Horace Earp retired, and Don Mackay came on board. With Te Puke expanding and a growing demand for accounting services, additional partners were brought on, including John Mullany and John Robinson. By the late 1980s, Don Mackay retired, and Lance Ewens (current Director) and Vivienne Brownrigg became part of the leadership team, renaming the firm Bennetts & Partners. The 1990s saw further expansion, including the opening of a branch in Mount Maunganui and a significant merger with M.S. Gibson in 1997. The merger ensured that clients continued to receive the highest level of service, with much greater depth of expertise behind them.
Changing Hands, Staying Strong
The early 2000s brought new leadership as John Murray and John Robinson retired, and James Stewart and Dale McGuire joined the firm. During this period, Bennetts & Partners reached its peak employment of 28 staff across two offices. Director, Lance Ewens reflects, “Those years were very enjoyable, and we certainly shared and supported the success of the Te Puke community in many ways.” Despite some challenges in 2012 and 2013, including a rebrand to Bennetts Proactive and the directors choosing to go their own way, the firm’s commitment to its community remained unwavering.
In 2014, Lance took full leadership of the practice, guiding Bennetts Proactive Accountants Limited forward. With his long-term commitment, the firm retained its identity and ethos, setting the stage for a fresh chapter.
Thriving Today
Under the continued leadership of Lance, Bennetts Proactive thrives at its home on 8 Queen Street, supported by a dedicated team, including two recently appointed associates, Maria Livingstone and Amanda Hutchings. Together, they bring over 30 years of combined experience to the firm. Amanda reflects, “We have an incredibly strong team here, filled with talented people. The support is fantastic—everyone is eager to share their knowledge and offer help wherever it's needed.”
A Legacy of Service and Success
As Bennetts Proactive celebrates its 80th anniversary, it stands as a testament to enduring success. The firm has skilfully navigated the evolving landscape of the accounting profession, embracing modern technology while staying true to its core values. Above all, it remains committed to helping clients and businesses succeed.
Looking to the future, Lance is confident that the firm’s strong foundation, family-oriented culture, and unwavering dedication will ensure its continued success. With a solid legacy in place, Bennetts Proactive is poised to carry forward its mission for generations to come—far beyond the 100-year milestone.
